Care Quality Commission 26/08/19 - Present

Senior Data Modeller

The Care Quality Commission is a civil service run organisation that regulates health & adult social care across the United Kingdom. We monitor, inspect, rate and regulate services to ensure they meet the fundamental standards in quality so that patients are protected from harm. We use our parliamentary powers to hold health services to account which include Doctors/GPs, Clinics, Community Services, Mental Health Services, Dentists, Hospitals and Care Homes.

Responsibilities

Working with the business, data and information architects to develop the single source of 'truth'. I have gained experienced in creating complex models to represent data structures that inform the design of systems and tools.

A key focus of our work is the Regulatrory Platform Project which is broken down into a series of workstreams across multiple teams. It will look at replacing a series of ERP systems - with the first piece of work replacing Siebel CRM as it's no longer fit for purpose across a wide range of colleagues (Inspectors to Data Analysts). The business is looking to replace this in the second quarter of 2020.. Me and my team are involved in the challenges to consolidate and simplify CRM to the Enterprise Data Model. In my role I'm taking the lead to develop and consolidate the migration map. I have to map out the CRM physical data model AS-IS in collaboration with InfoSys against our Enterprise Data Model to prepare us for our next phase in building the Common Data Model. The migration map is charted against other ERP systems; i.e. Cygnum, OBIEE, CRM and looks at connecting our logical subject areas (i.e. Ruling, legislation). Working closely with our data architects who define our underlying data architecture against technical solutions and information architects who work with information to translate data into valuable insights/ KPIs that inform decisions. I'm adding value in my role by helping the CQC achieve it's aims and objectives to truly becoming an intelligence driven and digitally enabled organisation.

As part of the Regulatory Platforms Project I'm also communicating with all levels of stakeholders to help build the reference data model by sourcing definitions and working with other technical team members to ensure our code lists and common vocabulary are referenced in line to our latest version of our logical data models. The manual combines the subject area types in line with the Enterprise Data Model

  • Assists with coordination of database changes within context of overall configuration management process
  • Create, manage, and modify large complex logical data models using a variety of data modeling philosophies and techniques to enable implementation of the architecture to the business vision and strategic need
  • Help to define data governance practices and policies for the managaement and use of data models including common business vocabularies and taxonomies
  • Work with the business and technical teams in architecture to understand business requirements and translate them to appropriate data structures, engaging early in the design phases of products/services and explaining data modelling principles to senior stakeholders
  • Adhere to the CQC Architecture Best Practice standards and guidlines to Data Modelling
  • Adhere to the CQC's agile development methodology; working on a customer focused delivery approach

  • Kings College London 30/09/18 - 26/08/19

    Solution Analyst/Developer

KCL is one of the top 10 UK universities in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2018/19) and among the oldest in England. King's vision is to make the world a better place, building on its history of pioneering research that has advanced and shaped modern life. The research-led institution is based in the heart of London and holds over 32'000 students (including more than 11,700 postgraduates) from some 150 countries and over 10,000 employees.

    Responsibilities

Apprenticeship successfully completed and made a permanent member of staff with a higher level of responsibility in the workplace. I've been responsible for building the SITS inteface including scripting, testing, configuration and integration; developing, troubleshooting and resolving new/existing functionality. I have gone further in my role by having trained new starters to the team (Senior Solution Developer) and have represented the IT Solutions Team in periods of staff absence i.e. Higher level Strategy Review Meeting for King’s Mobile App with Ex-Libris (Library systems).

I've made improvements to our internal development guidlines by including a change process methodology/source for packaging developments in line with best practice, and developed a SITS Jargon Buster Glossary index to align broader understanding within the business for our use of specialist terminoligies within the Student and Teaching Solutions Team.

  • Day to day responsibilities include liaising with IT and external facing departments, managing work packages derived from projects within the team, including but not limited to:
  • SITS Improvement Programme - User Access Management Workstream; project initiative derived from the governments reinforcement of GDPR. The User Access & Data Management workstream focused on streamlining processes to ensure access levels to the server side API (eVision) used for the core student record system(SITS) was enabled for only those deemed necessary – rather than the universal access to the system customers were having when user accounts were set up by application services. Within this project I've collaborated with the Business Analysis Team to help run workshops and presentations for the business in aid of requirements gathering
  • SITS Improvement Programme - Compliance workstream; Remediating a list of defects and deficiencies from the Quick Applicant Setup/Quick Student Set Up (QAS/QSS) screen in SITS to improve user experience and streamline process; preventing data corruption. I also took the lead for the further remedation of errors and bugs on the Change of Circumstances Form as part of Student Course Enrolment within the student portal (eVision) for the Student Administration Team
  • Finance project – Focussed on rolling out the company wide deployment of Unit 4 Business World to replace Aptos with the number of transactions affecting SITS data on a daily basis were approximately 7,000 sponsors and 83’000 applicants/students. Implementing solutions to deliver change with the Technical Coordinator for technical/service delivery; including the development of a hash key(SHA512) encryption algorithm for SITS. I also helped to coordinate the overall architecture by measuring out the key components of the current interface, comparing this to the proposed set up. This was implemented through mapping out the system interface using UML on Microsoft Visio. As part of the finance project I was also responsible to deliver the before Go-Live presentation to the Application Services Support Team which looked at pointing out the overall architecture of the components and expectations for support to remediate any finance related tickets for future support
  • Student Integration Enhancement (for Inplace: Medical System) Project. This project focused on reducing the need for regular changes/adjustments for both Nursing and Medicine faculties. I took the lead on this project by using the Stutalk component(SITS) to ensure necessary adjustments identified by the business were implemented on the feed using student data
  • Graduate Access and Data Retention Project for TARGET Connect - Ensuring the revised business rules were implemented to allow graduates to stay connected with the Careers & Employability service(Target Connect), and allow the business to maintain graduate contact details. Thus making sure the organisation adheres to regulatory body (Higher Education Standards Authority) compliance on graduate outcomes; in which greatly impacts on King’ funding. Within this project I worked with the technical coordinator, collaborated with the Team/key stakeholder to understand business requirements and queried the oracle database using SQL to implement the latest updates to the feed
  • Responsive Design Project - Developed a mobile friendly interface for SITS programmes (Online Programme and Module Administration) to improve and enhance user experience
  • Support projects and work packages to deliver IT as a service to end users

    • Actively engage in the department change decision-making processes and the planning/implementation of change
    • Assist the Business Analysis Team to help run workshop meetings; assisting in the delivery of requirements gathering. Including but not limited to: processing, designing, modeling and documenting business system requirements

    • Engage the experience and view of others, use own judgement and own specialist expertise to resolve issues and develop solutions to resolve new problems
    • Assist with the development of IT services and their integration with other IT applications and College approved software
    • Ensure all developments adhere to the KCL Student & Teaching Solutions best practice guidelines are followed to make sure the program is developed, packaged, tested and deployed in various environments in sequence

I enjoy visiting museums, art galleries & architecture, movies, meeting friends, eating out, and travelling.. In my previous role I was chairman of KCL's Diversity & Inclusion Group in IT (DIGIT). DIGIT looked at promoting and supporting diversity in the workplace by helping to provide an environment where everyone feels able to participate and achieve their potential. DIGIT tries to achieve this through event planning/projects/initiatives aimed at achieving workforce participation by helping to add value to employee well-being and engagement. UK legislation – covers age, disability, race, religion, gender and sexual orientation among others – sets minimum standards, although an effective diversity and inclusion strategy goes beyond legal compliance. This is where the diversity and inclusion in IT group found it's 'gap in the market' with executive backing from the CIO. I have also taken additional training courses taken where necessary to enhance professional and personal development.
